Our Take on the Game

Forgive us... we've been derelict in our duties, folks. We neither saw, listened to, or even particularly cared about this game. As I expected, it was another typical Steeler preseason floundering match; a sloppy, error-filled event in which our 2nd stringers "appeared" to outperform our starters.

YAWN.

This is why I hate preseason games. Few, if any, questions about this team have been answered, and few, if any, problems have been solved. We still ostensibly have no passing game, no running game, no offensive line, and a first-team defense that has looked very suspect overall. So rather than beat a dead horse, we're going to abstain from commenting on the gridiron tranquilizer that was this game. Just glad to get it over with.

Mercifully, another worthless preseason is finally over, which can mean only one thing...

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL??? We'll finally find out for REAL next Sunday what the Y2K Steelers are made of.

Until then, my Steeler brethren... Tim McMillen

So, anybody looking for a playoff team this year?

OK, yes, that's cruel - but what the heck, I'm a Steeler Fan. I'm disgruntled. I'm frustrated. I'm starting to feel pretty sarcastic about my Steelers - visions of Mark Malone's team keep me awake at night. It isn't supposed to be this way, but it is.

Oh sure, Josh Miller is doing one helluva job, probably the most consistant player on the team. He gets plenty of practice. The Defense seems to be firming up, at least the first team. I don't know how strong we are if we have to go deep into the bench, but the first team has actually been playing some pretty good ball against a variety of offenses, including the 'Skins. The linebackers are looking tough this year.

The Offense is completely screwed up. The failure of Kordell Stewart to show any reason for anyone to have confidence in his ability to lead this team has helped lead us to this miserable point. The regular season begins now, and Coach Cowher says he's "going to use both of them this year." "Them" being Stewart and Graham.

One interesting theory stated on KDKA in the 'Burgh is that Cowher will use Graham at home, and Stewart away - citing Stewart's above-500 performance in away games last year. Hey, it's just a rumor, but an interesting one nonetheless.

Graham's performance in Friday night's game against the Redskins was, in my opinion, extremely strong. I know, the stats don't bear that out. But it looked to me like the receivers were dropping all those balls because they were not used to having the ball hit them in the numbers, or in the hands, or in stride. On one play (medium pass over the middle to Burress), the receiver actually began to lean backwards in his route in anticipation of a pass low and behind him (right THERE I see a problem with the 2-QB plan). Had he continued in stride, he would have had the opportunity to drop a really easy catch. Sure, there was the overthrown ball to Bruener which would have been a TD, but that looked like an adrenaline overthrow to me. I forgive him, it was preseason. NEVER do it again.

And Troy Edwards, where'd you get those bricks you call hands? Maybe if you practiced catching balls as much as you do running your mouth, you'd have more to talk about. If you whine about not getting the ball enough, make sure you catch it when it does come your way, will 'ya? Please?

I'm a Steeler Fan. I'm disgruntled. I'm frustrated. And, just like you, deep down inside where nobody can see, there's this little tiny spark of hope that things will click and we WILL be in the playoffs after all.

We can't help it. We're the Black and Gold
