Scoring Summary
Fe-Fi-Fo-Fum
Kordell Stewart was squashed by the Giants in the Steelers' 30-10 loss Sunday.
|
First Quarter
NYG - FG, Brad Daluiso 38 Yd.
Second Quarter
NYG - FG, Brad Daluiso 40 Yd.
NYG - TD, Tiki Barber, 3 Yd run (Daluiso PAT).
PIT - FG, Kris Brown 32 Yd.
Third Quarter
NYG - TD, Ike Hilliard, 9 Yd pass from Kerry Collins (Daluiso PAT).
Fourth Quarter
NYG - FG, Brad Daluiso 21 Yd.
NYG - TD, Amani Toomer, 2 Yd pass from Kerry Collins (Daluiso PAT).
PIT - TD, Bobby Shaw, 5 Yd pass from Kordell Stewart (Brown PAT).
Key Stats & Facts
Kerry Collins 24 of 35, 68.6%, 333 yds, 2 TD, 0 Int: Okay, did anyone see THIS coming? Clearly, the Steeler secondary didn't. I mean, c'mon, it's Kerry Collins! As a whole, the entire defense played a sub-par game, but this was quite possibly the poorest performance I've ever seen from Levon Kirkland. And am I the only one who thinks that at some point Tim Lewis is gonna have to figure out a scheme to contain all those passes underneath to the backs? The Giants ran the exact same scheme Philly used to beat us.
Tiki Barber 6 catches, 75 yards: Speaking of those underneath passes, RB Tiki Barber is really the guy who killed us. Yeah, Amani Toomer had bigger numbers (9 catches for 136 yds & a TD) and Barber only gained 22 yds rushing on 12 carries. But it was the little flips to Barber (starting with the 18-yarder on the first play of the game) that opened up everything else for the Giants offensively.
Kordell Stewart 20 of 35, 57.1%, 226 yds, 1 TD, 1 Int: For a change, Kordell's stats look a lot better than his actual performance. It's usually just the oppossite. Stewart was inaccurate at times and frequently indecisive, but he was also under consistant pressure, had a number of passes dropped (what a shock), and got almost no help from the running game.
Jerome Bettis 17 carries, 39 yards, 2.3 avg: This isn't a huge shock... we all knew coming in that the Giants have the NFL's top-rated run defense. He still managed to gain almost as much as Giant RBs Tiki Barber and Ron Dayne combined.
Troy Edwards 1 catch, 25 yards: Holy cow, Troy-boy actually caught a pass! Hey, don't laugh... that equals his total output for the previous 3 games! Man, I can't believe we wasted a 1st round pick on this guy.

Well, That Sucked.
Fat Lady Singing in Pittsburgh
Article by McMillen & Wife
Sorry, guys, there's no silver lining to this one. The Steelers weren't merely outplayed by the Giants on Sunday... they were systematically dismantled in every single facet of the game.
We couldn't run. We couldn't pass. We couldn't kick. We couldn't punt. We couldn't contain kick returners. But we made up for it by not tackling (apologies to John McKay). We contained the run, but Kerry Collins cut us to shreds through the air. We did stop New York once on 4th and goal, but we couldn't stop 'em on 3rd down (particularly 3rd & long) all afternoon. Clearly, those of us who dared to utter the words "Steelers" and "playoffs" in the same breath after last week's upset of Oakland were dillusional. This was a disaster, start to finish. Welcome to the real world, I guess.
If you happen to be a fat lady, let 'er rip... perhaps a verse or two of "Turn Out the Lights, the Party's Over" would be appropriate.

Say Your Playoff Prayers!
|
Here's the laundry list you should take to church the next time you pray for a Steelers miracle.
- The Steelers need to win both of their remaining games (against the Redskins and at San Diego).
- The Jaguars have to lose one of their remaining two (both on the road, at Cincinnati and the New York Giants).
- The Jets need to lose two (the Detroit Lions at home and at the Baltimore Ravens).
- The Colts must lose one of their last two games. The Colts are at Miami and home against the Minnesota Vikings.
Certainly, it's not a gimme... but 'ya know what? It's not out of the realm of possibility, either, folks. Cross your fingers!

The key to this loss was that the Giants did not beat themselves. I can think of three or four Steeler wins this year where the opposition inflicted more damage to themselves than the Steelers (wins over the Raiders and Bengals come to mind). Give the Giants credit, especially Collins for carrying them when the Steelers were containing the run nicely.

Well, folks, it was fun while it lasted wasn't it?
I actually thought the Steelers had a real shot at the playoffs.
But to have that shot, they needed to win today when they took to the
field against the New York Giants.
Plain and simple, the Giants were just the better team today.
I've got to give a lot of credit to Jim Fassel and his staff. They came
up with very good game plans on either side of the ball, and they
executed.
For those of you who want to assign blame for today's loss, I'll finger
your culprit right now.
The Special teams.
OK, the defense kept getting picked apart underneath for those 8-13 yard
passes which seemed to give the Giants a 1st down where ever they needed
one. I'll give you that. And that Toomer guy, I don't know who he is
or how good a year he is having, but he burned us pretty badly. I'll
give you that too.
But I still don't think you can lay this one on the defense. The Giants
wracked up some nice yard totals, but the defense played hard, hit hard,
but I don't think they got out schemed or manhandled the way they did
against, say, Jacksonville.
The Steelers special teams have been hovering between average and
mediocre all year. But this game brought home what the Philadelphia
game revealed. The Steelers special teams are a major liability for the
Steelers.
In the first half the Giants, on average, were beginning their drives on
the Steelers 43. And that number doesn't reveal the two times they
started in Steelers territory. Folks, you yield that kind of field
position to a sub .500 team and you're putting them in the game. You
yield that kind of yardage to a team fighting for home field advantage
in their conference, and you're in some serious trouble.
Kris Brown didn't help either by missing to entirely makable kicks. You
might look at things and say: "well, Keith, it was 30-10, what
difference would have six points really made?" And I'd say "it would
have made a big difference." Football is a game, more so than most
other sports, where the tempo and the strategy of the play calling on
both sides changes dramatically based on the score. Early in the 4th
quarter it could have been 23-9. That's not pretty, but at least the
Steelers would have been in the game.
Moreover, both of those misses came after the Steelers had put together
some decent drives. And to do that, not once, but twice, and come up
with nothing....? Sorry folks, you just can't do that in these kinds of
games. (And saying that doesn't even take into account the type of
field position that you yield when you miss a field goal....) I've
defended Kris Brown when he's missed important kicks before, but pal,
this is becoming a little too regular.....
On the offensive side of the ball you've got to give the Giants defense
credit. They controlled the line of scrimmage, shut Bettis down. A
couple of our guys had a few more "catchable balls not
caught,"(otherwise known as drops,) and again, in a game like this you
can't have that. In the past I've been critical of Gilbride for
abandoning efforts to establish the run too soon. Now I'm going to
reverse myself and say that the pass should have been emphasized
sooner. Kordell was generally on target when out guys caught the ball,
he generally making good decisions, and should have been given a chance
to win the game before it was too late. But perhaps that would have
been for naught. On a day where our special teams were horrible, and
and the Giants offense was superbly efficient, the Giant's D did exactly
what it had to do.
Once again, you've got to give a lot of credit to Fassell and his
staff. They had a good game plan, our special teams gave them
opportunities to implement it, and they took advantage of those
opportunities.
Like I said, it was fun while it lasted. To those who say: "play for
draft position," I say - absolutely NOT! The Pittsburgh Steelers NEVER
go out there to lose. And in a year when some people were picking us
behind Cleveland and Cincinnati, a .500 or above .500 record is
certainly something to fight for.
Regardless - Keep the Faith!

It was certainly disappointing to see the kind of effort put forth today by the Steelers, especially with a possible (although slim) playoff berth at stake. I cannot believe this is the same team that played with so much heart in a win against the Raiders last week. I will not accept that the NY Giants are THAT much better than us. I would very much like to see us win our final two games, finish at 9-7, and have something to build on for next season. (Re-signing Bettis would be a good place to start. How could you NOT?)
Trying to figure out this team makes me tired.

The Steelers game against the Giants is another classic example of
why this Steeler team needs alot of help at alot of different positions
. This team desperately needs a pass
rushing defensive lineman who can consistently get pressure on the
opposing QB .
When a third rate bum like Kerry "the quitter" Collins can stand in
pocket and disect an opposing defense like the Steelers , youve got a
serious problem . Secondly and most importantly , why in the hell did
the Steelers play so flat and unemotional in a game that had so much at
stake ? This team had a legitimate shot at going to the playoffs ,
provided they beat the Giants , Redskins and Chargers . And yet , with
all this at stake they come out and sleepwalk trough a game they should
have been jacked up a mile high for ! To me , ole Mr. Bill needs to be
docked a game check because theirs no way in hell that he had this
Steeler team ready to play in a game that was critical to their season !
As for Kordell , his stats on paper actually look pretty decent except
we all know stats can be decieving . Stewert as usual , looked lost at
times and very confused . His up and down yoyo career needs to come to
an end when this season comes to an end . Finally we can now look
forward to free agency and the upcoming draft . If this organazation
wants to win again in the near future they must address the defensive
line and the Quarterback position . My Steeler X-mas list reads (1)
Quarterback (2) Pass rushing defensive lineman
Until next time,

the game was just crap. it was the
jacksonville game all over again except we couldn't cover anybody even though we
contained the run. it was just a nightmare.anyone wants to blame kordell for
this game can kiss where the sun don't shine. there was just a whole list of
errors. kordell needed to block, hike the ball, throw it and catch it himself
in order to help our offense. two miss field goals, offensive line needs to
improve, receivers need to catch better, we need a big draft ladies and
gentlemen. i love dawson but we need a young backup center who will become
starting center, defensive linemen, safety, receiver, please stop getting these
journeymen back up qb's ala tomzcak, graham they just suck. when graham came in
for a injured stewart last week, i thought i was going to need some tums or
rolaids for my stomach. i love routing for my STEELERS. THEY HAVE TO STAY
MOTIVATED AND NEED TO KEEP THE MOMENTUM FOR SIXTY MINUTES. WE BETTE!
R BEAT THOSE SKINS NO MORE EXCUSES!
