The Bigger They Are

Steelers (7-6) at Giants (9-4)
Article by McMillen & Wife

True, following their huge last-second 9-7 win in Washington last week, the G-Men now control their own destiny on the road to the playoffs. But after chatting with some of their fans and doing a little surfing to get a feel for what's going on in Giants-land, a famous Chuck Noll quote from the glorious '70s comes to mind: "These guys think they won the damn Super Bowl last week."

Of course, they didn't. In reality, what New York did was squeak out a win against a struggling Redskins team that has lost 4 of it's last 5 games. I don't know about you, but I think the surging, emotionally charged Steelers will present a "slightly" larger hurdle to the Giants' dreams of playoff glory.

'Da G-Men
Tiki Barber and the Giants hope to stiff arm their way past the Steelers. Will they succeed? We think not.
Not that I'm knocking the Giants, mind you... they're a pretty solid team that has really shown some grit over the last few weeks. But in light of Kordell Stewart's renaissance, I can't help but believe that the Steelers will prevail in this one. I'll tell you this... if I'm Giants head coach Jim "Joe Namath" Fassel (a la the playoff guarantee), I'm worried about this game. VERY worried.

True, the G-Men boast outstanding run defense and have allowed only one 100-yard rusher this season (Eddie George). But they've also given up some huge passing numbers, particularly at home, where opposing QBs are averaging over 230 yards a game.

Complete Schedule

True, the Giants are 2nd in the NFC with 17 Ints. But 5 came in a single nightmarish game courtesy of Troy Aikman (the Giants still nearly lost, finally edging Dallas 19-14), and 3 more picks were week 1 gifts from Cardinal disaster Jake Plummer. New York has also allowed 3 or 4 TD passes in a game on several occassions. Certainly, I'm not saying their defense is bad... but they CAN be beaten.

True, New York is the NFC's #2 rushing team averaging about 135 yards a game, and QB Kerry Collins has been playing surprisingly well. But I'm happy to report that Giant RBs Tiki Barber and Ron Dayne don't amount to a pimple on Jerome Bettis' ass. And frankly, I would've taken Kordell Stewart over Kerry Collins even BEFORE Stewart's "re-emergence". As it stands, the Steelers are suddenly fielding a formidable offense again behind Stewart & Bettis with, dare I say it, big play capabilites. The Giants have no comparable big-play threats.

And lastly, the Giants are 9-4... but 3 of their 4 losses have come at home. The Steelers, on the other hand, have won 4 of their last 5 road games, with their lone loss coming on a last second FG vs the Titans.

The bottom line? This won't be an easy win... but it will be a sweet one.

Predicition: Steelers 20, Giants 16

See 'yins after the game, my bruthas. GO STEELERS!

Tim & Babe--

I think the Giants are going to pose a tougher challenge than the Raiders, at least on defense, with the #3 overall in the conference. They are quite stout against the run, so the Bus better be running on all cylinders! Why not get Amos into the game for a little speed, to mix it up a bit? I predict another fine game by Kordell; he may have to put it up often! Weather should not be a factor. I predict a close, low scoring, hard fought game, with our boys prevailing by 7 points or less.
